As the weather becomes warmer and the sunny days are more prevalent, we may become more energized (hopefully) to play outside. While cuts, bruises and broken bones will heal, damage to your brain can remain for a lifetime. When choosing to ride a bike, however, you must remember that your head can instantly be smacked on the street, concrete sidewalk, curb, tree, or anything around you. Once this accident happens, your life may be changed forever. For this reason, no matter what your age or level of experience, when riding a bike or participating in activities where your head is vulnerable to injury (i.e., skating, skiing or sledding), you should wear a helmet.
Each year, bike related crashes kill about 900 people and injure 567,000 others. Our youth are especially vulnerable to head injuries. They have proportionally larger heads and higher centers of gravity, and their coordination is not fully developed so it becomes more difficult for our children to avoid obstacles when biking, skating or skiing. In fact, children aged 5-14, have the highest rate of injury of all bicycle riders and bike accidents are the leading cause of death for these children.
Bike helmets protect your head when you fall or crash by absorbing much of the forced impact that would otherwise hurt your head. The thick plastic foam (firm polystyrene) inside the hard outer shell of your helmet crushes to cushion the blow. Bike helmets are so important that the U.S. government has created safety standards for them. When choosing a bike helmet, get one that meets the standard of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Make sure the helmet fits snug and does not slide from side to side or front to back. It should sit square on top of your head, covering the top forehead and not tilt in any direction. Make sure to fasten the chin straps when wearing the helmet or the helmet is likely for fall off your head when you need it the most. When purchasing a helmet for your child, buy one that fits your child NOW, not one to “grow into”. If an accident happens while wearing a helmet, please replace it for the damaged helmet may not be protective thereafter. Also, any bike injury no matter how minor wants an evaluation from the physician.
While bike helmets save lives and prevent injuries, there are a few cases when they are not appropriate. To begin with, let’s consider what bluetooth helmets are used for and why there was such a need for them.
Bluetooth technology was originally introduced as a means of allowing two pieces of hardware to communicate with each other. Such communication would be carried out over a relatively small distance.
The biggest advantage of this technology was that it did not rely on wires or cabling. It enabled what has come to be known as wireless communications.
How would all of this assist motorcycle owners? The reason why it would be seen as being so important for bike owners was that they struggled to hold conversations while on their bikes.
There were a number of factors that led to communications difficulties, including the fact that a motorbike is generally a noisy place to be.
Compete with the loud roar of the bike engine, plus additional noise caused by the speed of travel and by weather conditions, it was no surprise that bikers were sometimes struggling to make themselves heard.
Holding a conversation with a passenger was difficult, let alone attempting to speak to someone further away. What was needed was a headset that could be integrated into the helmet.
Such a headset, made possible by the use of bluetooth technology, would enable a rider to talk to a passenger, or even another biker. The headsets operate over relatively short distances.
An added bonus was that they could be used with a compatible mobile phone. The mobile phone could then allow hands free conversations between the bike rider and those located almost anywhere in the world.
It’s no wonder that these headsets and helmets have become so popular.
